Jitsushinkai was founded in 1996 by Mark Kirton who trained for many years in the Kyokushinkai style of Karate. Later, in a quest for further knowledge fuelled from his interest in martial arts, he studied Chinese Kick Boxing, Hapkido (The Korean art of self-defence) and Krav Maga (Israeli art of self-defence).
The main focus behind the formation of Jitsushinkai was to bring together the combative and defensive skills that could be readily adapted to the modern age. It was important to Mark Kirton to keep the power and strength of Kyokushinkai karate as well as incorporating the speed and agility of Chinese Kick Boxing with the defensive practical street skills of Hapkido. Twenty-three years of continuous study forms the adaptable art of Jitsushinkai.
Jitsu means reality, Shin means truth and Kai means to meet, join or associate.
The insignia is derived from an eagle protecting and guarding all of the key elements of Jitsushinkai – courage, honour, respect and humility. Enclosed for safe keeping in a golden chalice which is guarded by and held in place by the eagle’s talons. The eagle also signifies strength and determination to hold on to what is right. The fist on the chalice denotes power and strength. The eagle and chalice are enclosed by a circle representing continuity and circular action.
It is hoped that students of Jitsushinkai will learn all the positive and real aspects pertaining to the martial arts, such as good discipline, manners, courage and respect for their fellow man. We must accept and always remember that martial arts exist for the advancement of human beings, moulding mind, body and spirit in the face of adversity and uncertain times in the execution of our daily lives. In life we all have various obstacles and problems to overcome to achieve success, the strength and determination needed can be developed through training. For this reason, training children in martial arts at an early age can be of great benefit both mentally and physically. Finally, I feel martial arts training provides challenge, because without it there may be unfulfilled elements in our lives which need to be addressed.

A new book written by Shihan Mark Kirton looking at how his training and teaching of the past 35 years has adapted and changed to fit in with modern society.
A teacher or master must teach students in a truthful, realistic manner to prepare them for what could happen in a possible street attack or altercation. This syllabus reflects what he has learned and puts into practice the lessons he has taught his students.
Mark Kirton, 6th Dan Jitsushinkai Karate, who has been featured in the Traditional Karate publication, brings his unique app giving you step by step instructions to making self defence easy.
Using simple techniques, each one is photographed to allow you to follow his instructions easy. Still not sure? Then simply ask Mark a question directly via the app and he will be happy to answer any questions on any of his techniques.
This is one of the proudest moments in my life, presenting Hanshi Steve Arneil with his Hall of Fame award, sponsored by Martial Illustrated. Hanshi was my first teacher and master who set me on the path to what I have achieved and become today. I owe him my heartfelt thanks and gratitude.
This photograph is special. I was presenting Michael Gootch with his 3rd Dan after many years.
For those of you that do not know, Michael Gootch is in the Guinness Book of records for doing 100 press ups on his index finger, and has raised thousands of pounds for children's charities and associated organisations.
